Dirty rotten vegetables

The garden is done and the only thing left is to collect seeds. Yesterday I picked up a few rotten pieces from the ground and the last standing daisy. My husband got out the mulcher and took care of the rest. It wasn't a bad season. We had plenty of yummy fresh tomato's for sauce, salads, and neighborly offerings. The green peppers went haywire and now reside chopped in my freezer for later use. The strawberries did their first year best and sprouted and spread for next year. The rhubarb was skinny but plentiful and will be ready to complement the strawberries for pie in the late spring. The squash and gourds were the best producers until we were met by our new friend powdery mildew. Next year I will choose a new variety of green bean as the ones we had didn't really taste good.

I have been collecting seeds from my flowers and vegetables for about a month now. My husbands grandmother gave me a crock with a homemade lid that was her mothers and I have decided it should hold my seeds. Her mother had kept salt in it, and she had kept cookies. Maybe someday my daughter or granddaughter can keep something else in it.

Overall I am pleased with my first year garden. Next year I plan on surrounding the whole thing in massive bushes of mixed marigolds and maybe even a real picket fence. Oh, and lots of baby food vegetables. This new little peanut should be eating food just in time for some freshly grown produce.

So you've got a little peanut there now do you? :D I still say Congrats! Isn't it wonderful though to get such bounties from our gardens. It feels really good to give some to friends and neighbors. Hey Robin, have a great rest of the week and take care of that little peanut. hehehe.

So, to answer your question, yes Laura made Livy's costume which I think was pretty clever and practical. And, oh girl, I'm so excited for you I don't know what to do with myself. I wish I could hug you.

Our garden? Hmm, didn't love our green beans but thought we would as they were Blue Lake which are my favorite....but these? Not so much.

My cucs were very tasty! The powdery mildew was a hassle, but you know what I did and it worked? I cut the plants back and we got a second flush of zucks from that!

Marigolds all around the peremeter was a fabulous thing...so I'd recommend highly.

That's some of the things we learned. It's always an adventure! Oh, you cheater you.

I came over here by recommendation of Suburb Sanity. I like to visit new blogs and see "what's up"
I love your sidebar saying "don't believe everything you read on the internet". Sheees, good thing, I was beginning to think you were going to be WAY TO PERFECT. The kind that would just continue to feed into my own insecurities.
Next year I hope to plant a garden. I live in the country ....hubby just built this place and moved in in May, so next year we will attempt "the garden" and hope the deer don't eat everything.
We tried to go for our 'flu shot" a couple of days ago and were told it would be a 3 hour wait. WHAT, I am not going to sit around here among 100's of probably swine flu infested people, waiting for my shot, I'll get the flu just being HERE.
so we went home

I wish I had half the discipline it takes for a vegie garden... I just have rampant mint.

I love a vegetable garden. Mine did pretty good but I am thinking of doing some raised beds next year.

Sounds like your first garden was a success. My garden this year was my worst and it was far from my first. Oh well, there's always next year.
