Yearning for simplicity

I've been bored and not doing anything interesting. Seriously. I've organized EVERYTHING and all of my handy dandy made for t.v. gadgets are finally being put to use. My mother in law buys them for me as gifts. I actually have not only a dustpan equipped with a vacuum but an ice scraper that heats up. Yup. I have everything.

In my hunt for cleanliness in the house (all originating from an odd odor that I still have not quite pinpointed) I have been finding a yearning for simplicity. Whatever happened to not having everything and instead just having what you need. The integrity in gathering the wood that you are going to burn to keep the house warm and eating the fruits and vegetables that you worked so hard to grow all summer could be very satisfying.

We have been raised in this culture that demands everything and consuming is just a past time rather than a way to meet our needs. The things that I gather are usually things that have been given to me. If someone is so thoughtful as to buy you a set of microwave protectors (yes, I said microwave protectors) then who am I to secretly sneak them into a garage sale knowing full well that my giftor is going to say "Hey, how do you like those microwave protectors??? Niiiiice right?" Now ask me what I'm going to do about it?

Go ahead....I'm waiting.

I don't know. If you have any good suggestions for simplifying a suberban life I am all ears.

My husband is about to switch to staying home, so we are living on one income. So much stuff we don't NEED now that we aren't buying it -- but, even after five months of living on one income, it is still HARD. Just ... you know ... you don't need it, but want is something else entirely ...

I know exactly what you mean... Cleaning out my closet I just looked at it all and felt sort of hopeless almost. Overwhelmed by the sheer volume of stuff that all somehow belongs to me.

Anyways, I tagged you for something on my blog. So, yeah.

I know exactly how you feel. I feel I need to move just so I can get rid of all the 'stuff' that I don't use, look at, wear, or need anymore. I need a drastic measure. These incremental house-purging moments are not working for me anymore. *sigh* Yep. Know how you feel.

actually we want a lot of stuff but we really don't need everything we buy. i ask myself that every time i am about to buy something and often i can put it back, not always but it works half the time.
