Not so glamorous give away

During my time in college I studied dietetics and took a couple of cooking classes. While in these classes we covered a great deal on keeping your kitchen clean and food born illness. These are nasty little critters that cause all kinds of belly illness as well as general gross out. I also learned how to make a loaf of bread that was perfect and golden on the outside while still a large cold lump of dough on the inside. Perhaps I will save that story for another time.

Ever since these classes I have had an obsession with avoiding food that I specifically did not prepare or that was not prepared in a board approved environment. I like to refer to it as "stranger food" I picture the stranger home-kitchen-baker reaching down to pet a dog that just rolled in something dead outside while at the same time being distracted enough not to notice the 30 cats on the counter taking turns spraying the delightful meal. The cook then picks up the butcher knife that they used to chop some chicken five minutes ago, slices some fresh pineapple with it, drops one piece on the ferret cage resting at their feet, picks it up, then adds it to the mix. Get the picture?

So, in celebration of my 100th post I have decided to share my kitchen neurosis with a kitchen give away. I am a huge fan of aprons. I found this fabric and it reminded me of those vintage kitchens of the 40s. You, as the winner, must agree to overlook any flaw in the making of the apron as I am not a professional, although very good, and quite beautiful, but that is beside the point and all of these complements I am giving myself may give me a big head.

I have not allowed my dog to "waller" on it or the kids to place random things from the creek in the pocket. I have stared at it longingly but continue to refuse to wear it on the basis that cross contamination may occur should I accidentally lean into a pork chop and then package and send it to you. Most importantly I have reminded you that one must be careful when eating at pitch-in's, work, or from a friendly neighbor goody basket as all ingredients may not be obvious.

Now that I have ruined your appetite for the evening if not for the rest of your life, I shall leave you with instructions on how to win this little beauty. Please leave me a comment telling me what your favorite food is. If it has any special significance I would love to know why it is your favorite as well. I'm off to spend some quality time away from the computer until Friday August 7th and I plan on announcing the winner that evening. Thank you for reading!

Hi Robin. That's a wonderful apron because YOU made it, so it is special. Who wouldn't want to win it. It is sometimes hard to keep up with all the cleanliness stuff in the kitchen, but we have to in order to avoid illness.
Yes, please enter me in your contest. I think meat ball soup is my favorite. They are little balls of hamburger meat that have rice, onions, and tomatoes and the balls are then dropped into boiling chicken broth at which time the heat is lowered to cook slowly. Pieces of carrot and potatoes that have been halved are added. It is slowly cooked until the meatballs and veggies are done. Why do I like this dish so much. It was my dad's favorite. There you go Robin. I'll miss you while you are gone. Look forward to seeing you when you come back. Enjoy your time off.

The apron looks very cute! My fav food is an indulgence...pizza. I consider it a treat to have it, since it's too fattening to be part of my regular diet. :)

Spiral pasta with pesto made just seconds before, tossed with italian sausage and sun-dried tomatoes. PL's favorite post-trampoline class meal, period. DW's favorite because it's PASTA yet isn't covered in red sauce (can't eat much tomato due to ulcers). My favorite because it's PASTA but isn't covered in white sauce (which I can't eat due to the cheese).

Enjoy your week away!

My favorite food is fried eggplant, but as I am in a gridlock of determination to shed 100 lbs that some unscrupulous hag left on my body one night while I was asleep, I'm afraid it's not very often on my menu.

Your apron is adorable. Your writing is even more fun. Your bread? Well, let's let that go for a moment, shall we?

Now, before I close, I want to tell you that I am concerned that my post has given you a head ache!
What's up with that? WE simply can't have that...how can I make it better?

Tea? A nice scone? I only used it as a hockey puck playing with my dogs. But, just for a few moments. Look, you can't even see the hair. Have a seat...the kettle is on.

Great apron! I found myself chuckling as I read your post. I too went to school for dietetics and understand the whole 'clean kitchen' thing. I'm still tempted to dip my just washed dishes in Clorox water just to be safe...

The apron is very pretty. I love the material.

My fav food recently is tomatoe pie. I am in love with it. I never had it until recently and I just want it all the time now.

Soup! Mostly because I love making it. I used to make a big pot every Saturday when I was a teenager. Oh, and it's no fun unless there's no recipe involved. :) I'm suffering here because it's been so hot, but I finally gave in this morning and started a big pot of chicken soup. I don't care how hot it is.

i have so many favorite foods, usually combining taste and a good memory but I guess my fav is my mothers stuffing on Thanksgiving, maybe because we only get it once a year or maybe because its the same recepie shes used for 50 years.

And I have a vintage apron collection, some are out hanging on my kitchen wall, yours would be among good comapny.

While I have no use for an apron, particularly one of such color and style, I applaud you for your 100th post!! Congrats! :D Your blog never fails to entertain

I work in food service so I too am slightly psychotic when it comes to food safety. My husband would say that my obsession teeters on obnoxious.

My new favorite food is black bean taco salad. Crock pot the beans all day while you are busy at other things, prep your topping just before hand and you have a very easy, healthy and cheap dinner that is delicious.

The apron is beautiful, and while I imagine that I would be oh so very Donna Reed in it, I am afraid I'd be a huge disappointment to anyone expecting that - in looks or cooks. :)

Food is my obsession, and good food is my valhalla, but I'd have to say that my very favorite Sweet Potato Crunch. It's a dish my mom has made at holidays for years, and my mom's mom made before her, so it's near and dear to me from that perspective. But I also love that it's this devilish blend of sweet potato goodness and pecan-brown sugar decadence that makes it a side dish AND a dessert. The creamy potatos and crunchy pecans -Yum. My mouth is watering just thinking of it.
